Express News Service

KOCHI: Dairy Development Minister K C Joseph on Friday declared Kunnukara grama panchayat near Kalamassery as the first dairy village in the State.

Speaking at the function held for declaring Kunnukara as the first dairy village, K C Joseph said that Kunnukara had become a model for the other panchayats in the State. According to the Minister, the government is planning to adopt one panchayat in each district for developing as dairy village. He said that the government had taken dairy development as a challenge, adding that the State’s dependence on the other states for milk had reduced substantially. Three years ago, the State purchased eight lakh litres of milk from the other states. Now, it has come down to just 1.5 lakh litres. Kerala is the third biggest milk producing state in the country.

Speaking on the occasion, PWD Minister V K Ibrahim Kunju demanded that an animal husbandry dispensary be set up in Kunnukara.
